The Cursillo pilgrimage to Knock, better Known as (The Walk to Knock) began in 1988. It was an organised event
to celebrate the Marian year and Cursillo 10th anniversary in the North West of Ireland. It was envisaged to be a one off event, but has since developed into a large community event over the last 19 years involving pilgrims from all over the North. From the diocese of Derry, Raphoe, Down and Connor and Dublin. Four years ago the Dublin walk began in response to a number of Dublin pilgrims who had participated in the pilgrimages from Derry and Belfast over 10 years.
There are now three organised walks setting out on Wed 18th July 2007From -:
1) Derry. (approx 160 people, from St Eugene?s cathedral). Walking distance 132miles.
2) Belfast. (approx 80 people, from Middletown, Co Armagh). Walking distance 130miles.
3) Dublin. (approx 30 people, From Maynooth). Walking distance 112miles.
The pilgrimage is completed over five days from Wed 18th ? Sunday 22nd July. The pilgrims walk approx 25 miles per day. From 9am to 6pm. At night they celebrate Mass and stay over in designated parishes as Follows.
Day 1 Derry to Ballybofey. Wednesday 18th July
Day 2 Ballybofey to Rossnowlagh. Thursday 19th July
Day 3 Rossnowlagh to Sligo. Friday 20th July
Day 4 Sligo to Charlestown Saturday 21st July
Day 5 Charlestown to Knock Sunday 22th July
The purpose of the pilgrimage is an offering of five days of prayer for the purpose Peace in our Hearts, Our Homes and in Our Country. Over the Walk the pilgrims pray the Rosary continuously throughout the day and each day is considered as an individual pilgrimage to the celebration of the Eucharist at night in our host town.
Required Support.
We need support from each parish where we will stay overnight, either for a parish or community hall for sleeping accommodation or alternatively if parishioners would like to offer bed and breakfast for any of the Pilgrims overnight this would be greatly appreciated.
